An active business account within 1 day

More and more often, you see the "iDEAL | Wero" logo appearing in web shops at checkout. You might be wondering: what exactly is Wero, why is that name suddenly popping up everywhere, and what does it mean for you?

In this article, you will read in clear language what Wero is, how it works, what the difference is with iDEAL and what you as an entrepreneur need to take into account.

What is Wero?

Wero is a European payment system with which you can transfer money directly from account to account, pay in webshops and soon also pay in stores. It was developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a collaboration of sixteen major European banks and payment service providers, and launched in July 2024. The name is a contraction of "we" and "euro", with a nod to the Italian word "vero", which means "true".

The idea behind it is simple: one recognisable payment solution that works in several European countries, instead of a tangle of local methods per country. In the Netherlands, Wero is the successor to iDEAL. With this, Europe wants to become less dependent on major foreign players such as Visa, Mastercard and PayPal.

How does Wero work?

Wero works on the basis of instant account-to-account transfers, using SEPA Instant technology. This means that a payment is transferred from one account to another within seconds, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You do not need to enter a long IBAN or payment details: a phone number, email address or QR code is sufficient.

For example, if you are splitting a restaurant bill with friends, you can send the amount to the other person in just a few taps via Wero, who will receive it in their account within seconds. As an entrepreneur, you can set up a payment request or invoice in the same way, which your customer then pays with a single confirmation in their own banking environment.

In practice, you use Wero via your own banking app or via the separate Wero app. Step by step, more features will be added, such as paying at the cash register and managing subscriptions.

What is the purpose of Wero?

The goal of Wero is to have one common payment standard for the whole of Europe. Currently, almost every country still has its own solution, with iDEAL in the Netherlands and Payconiq in Belgium, for example. Wero is set to replace this fragmentation with a single method that works in multiple countries, ensuring you can pay in the same trusted way anywhere in Europe.

In addition, there is a strategic objective. A large part of European payment transactions currently run via American parties such as Visa and Mastercard, which together process about six out of ten card payments in the eurozone. Added to this are parties like PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay. With Wero, European banks want to build their own, internally managed alternative, so that payments, costs and payment data become less dependent on companies outside Europe.

What is the difference between Wero and iDEAL?

To understand the difference, it helps to know that the EPI acquired the Dutch organisation behind iDEAL at the end of 2023. Therefore, iDEAL will not simply disappear; it will be integrated into Wero. The trusted payment method you have known for years will become part of a broader European system.

What remains the same is the foundation. Just like with iDEAL, you pay directly from your account, in your own trusted banking environment, without having to create a separate account. For most people, paying with Wero will therefore feel the same as paying with iDEAL.

What changes, first of all, is the reach. iDEAL only works in the Netherlands, whereas Wero will soon work in several European countries. In addition, the cost structure for entrepreneurs is changing, and buyer protection is being introduced. With iDEAL, a payment is final and cannot be reversed. With Wero, you can dispute a payment under certain conditions, for example, if an order is not delivered. In principle, a period of 120 days applies, which can be extended up to 540 days for specific categories such as hotels and plane tickets.

When does Wero replace iDEAL in the Netherlands?

The transition is intentionally taking place step-by-step, because iDEAL is deeply established after more than twenty years. Since 29 January 2026, the combined logo "iDEAL | Wero" has been appearing for online payments, so that consumers and entrepreneurs can get used to the new name. In the course of 2026, transactions will be gradually transferred to the Wero infrastructure in the background. From 2027, the new Wero functions will become available, and the focus will shift entirely to Wero.

The transition is expected to be completed by the end of 2027, and the name iDEAL will permanently disappear. The exact end date is still subject to change: the technical migration is taking place under the supervision of De Nederlandsche Bank, and the final schedule depends on approval and market consultation. For you as a user, this mainly means you do not have to do anything; you will just continue to pay as you are used to.

What are the benefits of Wero?

Wero is more than just a new name for iDEAL. The system brings a number of concrete benefits, both for consumers and entrepreneurs:

  • Cross-border payments: with a single payment method you can pay in multiple European countries, without needing a separate solution per country.

  • Payments in seconds: thanks to SEPA Instant, the money is immediately credited to the recipient's account, day and night.

  • Strong security: you confirm every payment in your own banking environment, with strong authentication such as a fingerprint or facial recognition.

  • Buyer protection: if something goes wrong with a purchase, you can dispute the payment, something that was not possible with iDEAL.

Together, these benefits make Wero suitable for the way Europe is increasingly paying: fast, mobile, and across borders. Especially if you do business internationally, this can save a lot of hassle in the long run.

From when can you offer Wero to your customers?

For entrepreneurs who want to receive payments, the roll-out will take place in phases. The first step is online: in the course of 2026, Wero will gradually become available as a payment method in web shops. This will be followed by the physical shop, where you are expected to be able to pay contactlessly and via QR code with Wero in 2026 and 2027.

The actual roll-out on the merchant side is expected to start in the last quarter of 2026. Then, new integrations, contracts and access to Wero will become concrete. Your payment service provider will guide you through this transition, so you do not have to figure it out yourself. Still, it is smart to start preparing now.

Keep an eye on what your payment service provider communicates about the planning and technical requirements, and check whether your web shop, checkout system and any payment terminal are suitable for Wero. If you sell in multiple European countries, Wero can actually be an opportunity: with one integration, you will soon reach customers in countries including the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France, without offering a separate payment method per country. A good business account for your web shop helps you to keep your payment flows and your administration clear.

What does Wero mean for you as an entrepreneur?

In the short term, little will change in daily practice for most entrepreneurs. Nevertheless, it is wise to already know what is coming so that you are not faced with any surprises. Three points are worth keeping an eye on:

  • The cost structure: whereas you usually pay a fixed amount per transaction with iDEAL, Wero charges a percentage of the paid amount, which varies by payment service provider. A rate guarantee applies until the end of 2028, keeping costs comparable to iDEAL; after that, it is not yet known how the rates will develop.

  • Buyer protection: because customers can dispute a payment, an already received amount can, in exceptional cases, still be reversed. Especially in sectors with many returns, it is smart to look at your general terms and conditions, your administration, and your complaint process in good time.

  • Alertness to phishing: around the transition, scammers try to entice people to confirm details or activate something. You do not need to install or confirm anything yourself, as banks and payment service providers handle the transition through their official channels.

In short, you do not need to take action just yet, but by knowing these points you will be well prepared when Wero is rolled out on the merchant side soon. This way, you maintain control over your payments, your administration, and the transaction costs of your business account.

A modern business account that moves with you

Wero fits into a broader movement: payment is becoming faster, more digital, and more European. As an entrepreneur, you want a business account that moves with these kinds of developments, instead of an account that mainly costs you time and money. That is exactly what GoDutch focuses on: a smart business account for entrepreneurs, where your account, business Debit Mastercards, invoices, expenses, and the link to your accounting come together clearly in one app. Automation takes over a large part of your administration, and if you have a question, you speak to real people instead of an automated menu.

If you do business across borders, then this is extra relevant. With GoDutch, you can also easily arrange international payments for entrepreneurs, without the surprises you are used to with traditional parties. This way you keep a grip on your finances, whether you are active only in the Netherlands or throughout Europe.
