What is an accounting integration?
An accounting integration automatically puts the transactions of your business account into your accounting software. You no longer have to download and import statements, or retype anything.
An accounting integration is also called an integration with your accounting software. You notice the biggest difference in the rhythm of your bookkeeping. Without an integration, you often update your bookkeeping in one go each month or quarter, with a pile of transactions and receipts at once. With an accounting integration, your bookkeeping keeps pace with your business account every day, and your VAT return is no longer a catch-up job.
What does an accounting integration give you?
An accounting integration mainly gives you time and up-to-date accounts. The difference with updating by hand lies in these points:
No more importing statements: transactions come in by themselves, without downloading and re-uploading files.
No typos: amounts, dates and counterparties are copied exactly as they appear on your account.
An up-to-date view for your VAT return: you can see at any moment which transactions still need to be booked, not only at the end of the quarter.
Less work for your bookkeeper: your bookkeeper works with complete data, without first having to ask you for missing transactions.
What remains is checking and booking what is out of the ordinary: a payment that has to be split across two cost items, a missing receipt, a transaction that turns out to be private. The integration takes away the retyping, not your judgement on how something should be booked.
An accounting integration processes payments that have already been made. Reading and paying incoming supplier invoices is a separate step, which you handle with automatic invoice payment.
What data does an accounting integration share with your software?
An accounting integration shares the incoming and outgoing payments on your account with your accounting software: for each transaction the date, the amount, the counterparty and the description. Based on that, your software can match transactions to invoices and suggest how to book them.
A standard accounting integration is about reading data, not making payments. With an integration via PSD2, you decide which account is shared, and you can withdraw that consent again.
How does an integration with your accounting software via PSD2 work?
With an integration with your accounting software via PSD2, you give your software consent to read the transactions on your account. PSD2 is the European legislation that makes this possible, on condition that you give consent yourself.
That consent does not last forever: you have to confirm it again periodically. If you do not, the import stops and new transactions only show up in your accounting software once you have renewed the consent.
An integration that a provider has built directly with an accounting software package often works without that repetition. So check which kind of integration your own software uses, and set a reminder if you have to confirm periodically.
Accounting integration or manual import?
With an accounting integration your transactions come in by themselves, whereas with a manual import you transfer them yourself. Without an integration, you periodically download a file with your transactions, usually in MT940 or CAMT.053 format, and import it into your accounting software. That works, but your accounts then always lag behind your account, and every time you forget, a gap appears that you have to track down later.
With an integration, that task disappears. Manual import mainly still makes sense if your accounting software has no integration, or if your accounts are only updated a few times a year.
What do you set up before connecting your bookkeeping?
Before you connect your bookkeeping, you prepare a few things in your accounting software. This prevents duplicate transactions and entries in the wrong place, especially if you are switching from another account or have imported by hand until now:
A separate ledger account for the new account: create a separate account in your software, so GoDutch transactions do not end up among those of your old account.
The right administration: if you run several companies in one accounting software package, check which administration you are attaching the integration to.
A clear start date: transactions from before the integration do not come across automatically, and you import them with an MT940 file. Make that file line up with the date of the integration, so no transaction comes in twice.
Your old integration: keep the integration with your previous account running until all transactions from that account have been processed, and only then switch it off.
If you have doubts about any of these points, have a quick word with your bookkeeper before you connect. A wrongly set-up integration is more work to put right later than to set up properly from the start.
How do you connect your accounting software to GoDutch?
You connect your accounting software to GoDutch in five steps, using the guide for the integration with your accounting software from the list on this page:
Look up your software: choose your accounting software in the list and open the guide that goes with it.
Add the account in your software: create an account in your accounting software with the IBAN of your GoDutch account.
Start the integration: look up GoDutch in your software's list of integrations, or start the integration from your GoDutch account, as with Exact Online.
Give consent: log in, confirm that your software may read your transactions and choose the right administration.
Check the first transactions: after your next payment, check that it comes into the right place in your bookkeeping.

Frequently asked questions
Can my bookkeeper or accountant have access?
Yes, your bookkeeper or accountant can see everything themselves. You give them their own access to your GoDutch account, so transactions, receipts and invoices can be viewed directly. How many users you add depends on your plan. The integration puts the data into the software; the access makes questions about a single transaction quicker to resolve.
How do I connect GoDutch to Exact Online?
You connect GoDutch to Exact Online by first adding your GoDutch IBAN as an account in Exact Online and then starting the integration via Integrations in your GoDutch account. The guide in the Help Centre describes each step. After connecting, new transactions come in automatically; you import earlier transactions with an MT940 file.
What do I do if my accounting integration stops working?
If your accounting integration stops working, first check whether your consent has expired. With an integration via PSD2 you have to confirm it again periodically, and until you do, no new transactions come in. If the integration still does not work after that, GoDutch's support team will help you 24/7 via chat, email or phone.
Can I stop an accounting integration?
Yes, you can stop an accounting integration. With an integration via PSD2, you withdraw the consent you gave to your accounting software, after which no new transactions are shared. The transactions already in your bookkeeping simply stay there.
