Are you choosing between KNAB or GoDutch for your business account? I started GoDutch because the 'free' offer at KNAB only lasts 12 months: fixed fees after a year, no cashback, and limited team tools. With GoDutch, a modern entrepreneur can open a business account in 1 day that stays free forever and automates your administration. On this page, I compare both accounts for your business.

What is the difference in value proposition between GoDutch and Knab for business owners?

The main difference lies in the breadth of the offering: GoDutch accepts almost every business legal form and offers a tiered package structure from €0 per month with cashback, team cards and international payment options. Knab focuses specifically on self-employed people and private limited companies with one shareholder, with a fixed package and saving tools aimed at freelancers.

On costs, both parties use a transparent model, but their starting points differ. Knab works with a fixed monthly fee of €7 (sole proprietorship) or €11 (private limited company) after a twelve-month free introductory period, with 500 free transactions per year. GoDutch starts from €0 per month with a fixed SEPA fee of €0.12 per transaction without limit, plus cashback of up to 1% on card spending, and these conditions do not expire after a promotional period.

Knab positions itself as a well-known bank for the self-employed, with more than 300,000 entrepreneurs as customers. GoDutch offers the same self-employed friendliness but with extra automation, team cards and cashback, and is also available to entrepreneurs who fall outside Knab's strict acceptance criteria. For those looking for a future-proof platform that grows from a sole proprietorship to an SME, GoDutch offers a broader foundation.

Which legal forms does Knab accept compared with GoDutch?

Knab accepts only sole traders and BVs with one shareholder, plus the specific combination of a holding company with one operating company where the holding company owns 100% of the shares. GoDutch accepts all common business legal forms in the Netherlands: sole traders, general partnerships (VOFs), BVs, NVs, holding companies, foundations, associations, owners' associations and cooperatives.

Concretely, this means the following is not available at Knab: an account for a VOF, partnership, association, owners' association or a BV with multiple directors and shareholders. For these groups, Knab maintains a waiting list for when they may be accepted, without a specific date.

GoDutch does offer these entrepreneurs a directly accessible alternative, with the same three-hour digital onboarding. Partners can choose an account for VOF entrepreneurs, while boards can apply directly for an account for foundations. For entrepreneurs who still fall within Knab's acceptance criteria but grow into a more complex structure, GoDutch prevents you from having to switch later on.

How much do Knab Zakelijk Start, Compleet and Premium cost compared with GoDutch?

Knab offers three business packages: Start, Complete and Premium, with rates that depend on the legal form (sole proprietorship or private limited company). All packages are temporarily free for twelve months for new customers. After that, the following monthly rates apply.

In addition to the package costs, additional charges apply: €0.10 per transaction above the 500 free transactions per year, €0.30 per business payment request, €1.50 per batch payment plus €0.10 per transaction in the batch, and €37.50 per year for a business credit card. GoDutch works with one fixed SEPA rate of €0.12 without transaction limits, batch surcharges or separate fees for payment requests. A comparison with the packages and GoDutch costs shows that the GoDutch Free package remains structurally below Knab's rates, even after Knab's twelve-month free period.

What does Knab’s 12-month free promotion include?

Knab’s twelve-month free offer means that new customers pay no package fees for Start, Complete or Premium during the first year. From month thirteen, the standard rates of €7 to €25 per month automatically apply, depending on the package and legal form. Transaction fees, payment requests and credit card fees do still apply during the promotional period.

In practice, that saves between €84 and €300 in the first year, depending on the chosen package and legal form. A sole trader with the Start package saves €84 (twelve months × €7); a private limited company owner with the Premium package saves €300 (twelve months × €25). From year two onwards, you pay the full rate.

By comparison, GoDutch offers a permanently free Free package with no end date. Over a five-year period, you pay Knab a cumulative €336 (ZZP Start, years 2 to 5) or €1,200 (BV Premium, years 2 to 5) in subscription costs, while GoDutch Free remains at €0 in fixed charges. For entrepreneurs who want to save money in the long term, a permanently free package is usually more favourable than a temporary discount offer. More about Knab’s terms can be found on the page about the Knab business account.

How many transactions do I get free per year with Knab compared with GoDutch?

At Knab you get 500 free transactions per year included in every package (Start, Complete and Premium). Above that, each additional transaction costs €0.10. GoDutch does not offer free transactions but charges a fixed rate of €0.12 per SEPA payment, with no upper limit and no increasing costs at higher volumes.

The break-even point between the two models is around six SEPA transactions per month. Below that threshold, Knab is cheaper on pure transaction costs because the first 500 per year are free; above that, it comes out much the same, with the difference that GoDutch has no fixed monthly costs on the Free plan and Knab does charge €7 to €25 per month from month thirteen onwards.

In addition, Knab charges separate rates for batch payments (€1.50 per file plus €0.10 per transaction in the batch) and business payment requests (€0.30 per request). With GoDutch, batch payments and payment requests are included in the standard rate, with no per-item surcharge. For an active entrepreneur with multiple customer payments, supplier invoices and recurring transfers, that adds up by the end of the year.

What are Knab Income Splitter and VAT Saving?

The Income Splitter and VAT Saving are two specific savings tools from Knab that automatically divide money or set it aside as soon as a payment lands in your account. They are handy tools for self-employed people who want to prepare their VAT return without having to think about it themselves.

Knab's savings tools for self-employed business owners:

  • Income Splitter: automatically divides each incoming payment into pots for VAT, profit, expenses and savings

  • VAT Saving: automatically sets aside the VAT portion of income in a separate savings account

  • Unlimited pots: create as many business savings accounts as you like for different goals

  • Up to 5 current accounts: open up to five current accounts with their own debit card

  • Batch payments: make several payments at once using the batch function (for a surcharge)

GoDutch works with a similar concept through real-time balance insight, unlimited extra IBANs and virtual cards for different purposes. At GoDutch these features are integrated into every package and automatic invoice processing and VAT recognition are included as standard, whereas Knab depends on external accounting integrations at €4 per month. For self-employed entrepreneurs who want to fully automate their administration, GoDutch's freelancer account offers the same overview function without additional integration costs.

Is Knab suitable for associations, foundations or general partnerships?

No, Knab is currently not suitable for associations, foundations, VOFs, partnerships or BVs with multiple directors. Knab's acceptance criteria are limited to sole proprietorships and BVs with a single shareholder, plus the holding-and-operating-company structure. For entrepreneurs in these non-accepted categories, Knab refers them elsewhere or offers a waiting list.

GoDutch has no such limitations and accepts all common legal forms. Directors of an association, foundation or homeowners' association (VvE) can open a digital business account where the subscription falls under the 0% VAT rate for non-profits. The opening process is entirely in-app, without physical appointments or long waiting times.

For boards of a GoDutch VvE account, in practice this means that you can add or change board members yourself after a changeover, without depending on a bank that does not serve your legal form at all. The same principle applies to VOFs and larger BV structures: broad acceptance and available immediately.

How does GoDutch’s cashback model differ from Knab’s?

GoDutch offers unlimited cashback on every card transaction of up to 1%, increasing by package. Knab offers no cashback on the standard debit card or optional credit card; you only pay €37.50 per year for the business credit card with no card rewards.

The cashback with GoDutch increases with the chosen package: 0% on Free, 0.1% on Starter (€12 per month), 0.4% on Pro (€29 per month) and 1% on Unlimited (€49 per month). The cashback is automatically credited back to your business account, with no upper limit and regardless of the type of spend.

For an entrepreneur with €5,000 in business card spending per month, the GoDutch Pro package delivers €240 cashback per year, and the Unlimited package €600. At Knab, for the subscription of €7 to €25 per month, you receive no card rewards, regardless of spending volume. For a GoDutch BV account where many expenses are paid via the business card (software, hardware, travel expenses), the cashback alone can more than cover the subscription costs, something that is not structurally possible with Knab.

Which accounting integrations does Knab offer compared to GoDutch?

Knab offers accounting integrations at an additional rate of €4 per month, on top of the package fee. At GoDutch, direct API integrations with more than 30 accounting packages are standardly included in every package, even in the free Free package.

The Knab integrations work via Moneybird, Tellow and several other commonly used packages. The fee of €4 per month comes on top of the monthly fee of the Knab package, in other words an extra €48 per year for the accounting integration. At GoDutch you pay no extra costs for the integration, regardless of how many packages you connect.

For a self-employed person who wants to automate their administration as much as possible, that means a difference of €48 per year purely on the accounting integration. Moreover, GoDutch offers standard automatic invoice processing and real-time VAT recognition in the app itself, whereas Knab requires the external integration for that. A complete overview of the available integrations can be found on the page with the GoDutch's accounting integrations.

Can I get an international payment package with Knab?

No, Knab is primarily focused on the Dutch market and does not offer an integrated international payment package. For payments in foreign currencies, Knab applies an exchange-rate markup of around 1% on top of the official rate, and there is no separate foreign-currency account available. GoDutch does offer an international package that is included in every subscription.

The international options at GoDutch:

  • Outgoing payments: to more than 60 countries worldwide

  • Incoming payments: from more than 150 countries

  • Currency exchange: at mid-market rates without hidden margins

  • Supported currencies: more than 20, with exchange rates visible in advance

  • SWIFT payments: outgoing and incoming, plus ACH and Fedwire for the United States

For entrepreneurs who do business internationally only occasionally, Knab is sufficient, provided you are happy with the exchange-rate markup. For a holding account from GoDutch with intercompany transfers to foreign operating companies, or for SMEs with international suppliers, GoDutch offers a fundamentally broader range of services. On €100,000 of annual currency transactions, the 1% exchange-rate difference alone saves €1,000 per year in GoDutch's favour.

How many team cards can I get with Knab compared to GoDutch?

Knab offers no team cards as a product. You have one main payment card for the owner and can open up to five business current accounts, but there is no functionality for extra cards with their own limits and spending controls per employee. GoDutch offers team cards as standard from the Pro package, with card-specific restrictions per card.

For a self-employed person without staff, that difference is less relevant, but for a limited company owner with a growing team it is a structural bottleneck. At Knab, you have to work with expense claims or cash advances for employee spending, whereas GoDutch can give every employee their own virtual or physical card with daily, weekly or monthly limits.

The team card capacity at GoDutch scales with the package: Pro offers 10 virtual cards, 5 physical cards and 10 team cards for expenses or travel; Unlimited offers an unlimited number of cards with 50 team cards. If an employee loses their card or leaves, you can block the card immediately in the GoDutch app. For growing businesses, this is a feature that is missing from Knab's offering and difficult to replace with the standard products.

How does Knab score in customer reviews compared with GoDutch?

Knab scores an average of 8.3 in the Consumers' Association survey and has been voted the best self-employed account by ZZP Daily four years in a row. It is an established Dutch online bank with more than 300,000 business owners as customers. GoDutch is newer (launched in 2024) and now has more than 20,000 active entrepreneurs, with strong ratings on Trustpilot and Google reviews.

The Knab scores mainly concern the basic business services: user-friendly app, reliable customer service and savings tools for sole traders. Knab's reputation is strong within the ZZP target group thanks to years of positioning as "the bank for the self-employed". GoDutch positions itself differently: as a broad digital platform with automation, team cards, cashback and international features, available for all legal forms.

For entrepreneurs who choose on the basis of familiarity and years of experience in the Dutch market, Knab is a safe choice. For those who choose based on features, pricing structure and growth potential (e.g. expanding into a VOF, holding company or working internationally), GoDutch offers an offering that goes further than Knab's current acceptance criteria. For a broader view of the market, a comparison of Dutch business providers provides additional context.

How do I close my Knab business account and switch to GoDutch?

Switching from Knab to GoDutch is arranged in four steps. Within one working day you have an operational account with GoDutch, and you only close your Knab account as the final step, so you can switch over calmly without missing payments.

Step-by-step plan for the switch:

  1. Open your account with GoDutch: complete the online application (three minutes), identify yourself with a passport or driving licence, and wait for the KYC processing (three hours). Your IBAN and virtual Mastercard are active immediately afterwards.

  2. Inform contacts about your new IBAN: send customers and suppliers a short email with your new account number. In the GoDutch app, download a bank statement with your IBAN for your records.

  3. Move direct debits and subscriptions: adjust recurring payments for energy, software subscriptions, suppliers and periodic invoices. In GoDutch, set these up as a standing order or via direct debit. Knab has its own switching service that forwards direct debits for up to thirteen months to your new IBAN.

  4. Close your Knab account: transfer the remaining balance to GoDutch and close your Knab account via the Knab app or by contacting the Knab Service Experts. A comprehensive guide to closing your Knab business account will guide you through this process.

Keep both accounts running in parallel for the first month, so any direct debits you may have forgotten are not rejected. If you have questions during the switch, the GoDutch support team is there for you 24/7 via chat, email or phone. Ready to switch to an account without package-choice stress and with cashback and team cards included? You can open your GoDutch account straight away and get started today.
