What are the key differences between GoDutch and ABN AMRO for entrepreneurs?

The key differences between GoDutch and ABN AMRO lie in the package structure, cost transparency, digital onboarding and the degree of automation in the app. ABN AMRO offers five business packages (Slim, Ambitious, Unlimited, Basic for Associations & Foundations and Medical Bank Account) ranging from €9.90 to €22.25 per month. GoDutch works with four packages starting from €0 per month, all with the same basic functionality and a transparent transaction fee of €0.12 per SEPA payment.

A second important difference lies in the additional costs. ABN AMRO charges customer due diligence costs from the second year for certain legal forms, plus separate rates for extra IBANs (€66 per year), extra internet banking users (€12 per year) and extra accounting integrations (€3.25 per month). With GoDutch, these features are included in the package, without hidden surcharges.

ABN AMRO offers entrepreneurs the advantage of an established major bank with physical branches, personal advice and a wide range of additional services such as financing and insurance. GoDutch focuses on fast digital onboarding, automation and cashback of up to 1% on card spending, without a physical presence.

Which ABN AMRO package suits which type of entrepreneur?

ABN AMRO offers five business packages, each aimed at a specific target group. The choice depends on your legal form, your transaction volume, whether you do business internationally and whether you work in a specific sector such as the medical profession.

ABN AMRO applies a turnover threshold of €25 million for the Volop Ondernemen packages; above that, a different offer applies for large corporate customers. For entrepreneurs who do not fit into one of the five categories, or who want a simple digital account without an extensive package selection, GoDutch offers a business account for freelancers and sole traders as a direct online alternative. BV owners can choose directly a business account for your BV without a layered package structure.

How does Volop Ondernemen Slim compare with the GoDutch Free package?

ABN AMRO’s Volop Ondernemen Slim package costs €9.90 per month, while GoDutch Free costs €0 per month. Both packages include the basic banking functions: a business account, the ability to make payments and balance visibility. The difference lies in what extra features are included as standard and in cost transparency over the longer term.

ABN AMRO Slim includes one business account, one debit card and one user for Business Internet Banking. An accounting link, extra payment accounts or extra debit cards are not available within this package. From the second year onwards, customer due diligence costs apply for certain legal forms. GoDutch Free includes one virtual Mastercard, a Dutch IBAN, free accounting links with more than 30 packages and 24/7 support.

In total costs, this means: with ABN AMRO Slim, over three years you pay at least €326 in subscription fees (based on the three-month free introductory bonus), plus any customer due diligence costs and transaction fees of €0.12 to €0.15 per transaction. With GoDutch Free, the fixed costs over the same three years are €0. A full overview of the rates can be found on the page with GoDutch rates and prices.

Is Volop Ondernemen Ambitious more interesting than GoDutch Pro?

Volop Ondernemen Ambitious for €13.75 per month includes one accounting integration and up to two debit cards. GoDutch Pro for €29 per month includes one accounting integration, 10 virtual cards, 5 physical cards, 10 team cards and 0.4% cashback on all card spending. At first glance, ABN AMRO Ambitious is half as expensive, but the packages differ considerably in what they offer.

For entrepreneurs with limited team use and little need for additional cards, ABN AMRO Ambitious is sufficient. For entrepreneurs with a team of five to ten employees, each needing their own card, or for whom cashback on spending is attractive, GoDutch Pro offers significantly more value. An entrepreneur with €5,000 in card spending per month would earn €240 cashback per year with GoDutch Pro (0.4% × €60,000), which already roughly halves the price gap between the packages.

In addition, the accounting integration of ABN AMRO Ambitious includes one integration as standard; extra integrations cost €3.25 per month. With GoDutch, all integrations with more than 30 packages are included as standard. You can find a complete overview on the page with GoDutch accounting integrations.

When do you pay customer due diligence costs at ABN AMRO?

ABN AMRO charges customer due diligence costs (also known as a KYC surcharge) from the second year for certain legal entities, in particular private limited companies (BVs), public limited companies (NVs), general partnerships (VOFs) and similar structures. The level of these costs varies by legal entity and can amount to several euros per month on top of the package fee, without this being included in the package price in advance.

This is a contribution towards the costs ABN AMRO incurs for ongoing client due diligence in accordance with the Dutch Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (Prevention) Act (Wwft). These costs usually do not apply to sole traders and self-employed persons, but they do apply to BVs with multiple directors and holding structures. In practice, this amounts to a surcharge that can vary by business, rising to tens of euros per month on top of the regular package price.

GoDutch does not charge a separate KYC surcharge on top of the subscription. The costs for customer due diligence are included in the standard rate and are the same for all legal entities. For a detailed comparison of the actual costs, see the page about the ABN AMRO business account.

What is the Volop Ondernemen Grenzeloos package and when is it useful?

Volop Ondernemen Grenzeloos is the most expensive business package from ABN AMRO, at €22.25 per month, aimed at entrepreneurs who do business internationally on a structural basis. The package includes more extensive international payment options, more favourable rates for international payments and several accounting integrations as standard. It is intended for businesses that regularly receive or make payments in foreign currencies.

For entrepreneurs who work in multiple currencies, ABN AMRO Grenzeloos offers more functionality than Slim or Ambitieus, but still with an exchange rate surcharge of around 1.4% on top of the official rate. At GoDutch, international payments are integrated into every package from €0, with payments in more than 20 currencies at the mid-market rate and without separate subscription costs for a foreign-currency account.

For a holding structure that makes intercompany transfers to foreign operating companies, this difference can mount up considerably. On €100,000 in annual currency transactions, the exchange-rate difference already saves €1,400 per year. For a business account for your holding company, that is a measurable saving on an annual basis.

Does ABN AMRO offer a special package for medical professionals?

Yes, ABN AMRO offers the Medical Current Account: a specific package for GPs, dentists, physiotherapists and other medical professions. The package includes tailored functionality aimed at the medical sector, such as integration with practice administration software and specific payment flows around healthcare providers.

The fee for the Medical Current Account is available on request and depends on the specific profession and size of the practice. ABN AMRO positions this package as part of its sector-specific offering, alongside the Current Account for agricultural businesses and other niche packages.

GoDutch does not offer sector-specific packages, but works from a uniform offering in which medical entrepreneurs receive the same functionality as other self-employed people: fast digital onboarding, free accounting integrations and cashback on card spending. For healthcare providers who want to automate their administration without being dependent on a sector-specific package, this is a more accessible model.

How long does it take to open a business account with ABN AMRO?

Opening a business account with ABN AMRO usually takes one to three working weeks, depending on the package and the complexity of the legal structure. For a simple Slim account for a self-employed freelancer, this can be quicker; for an Ambitious or Borderless package for a private limited company (BV) or holding company, more documents have to be submitted and verified. At GoDutch, the process is completed entirely digitally in three hours.

The steps at ABN AMRO are as follows. You start online with an application, submit an extract from the Chamber of Commerce (KVK), proof of identity and any additional documents (such as UBO declarations for private limited companies and holding companies). ABN AMRO checks these documents and may ask for additional information. Once approved, you receive your debit card and PIN by post, usually within a few working days. In practice, the whole process from application to an operational account takes one to three weeks.

At GoDutch it works entirely in-app: three minutes' online registration, identification via passport or driving licence, three hours' KYC processing and your virtual Mastercard is active immediately. For entrepreneurs who want to be able to invoice or invest straight away, that difference in onboarding time effectively means days to weeks of productive time.

Do I get standard cashback on business expenses at ABN AMRO?

No, ABN AMRO does not offer standard cashback on the business debit card or the optional credit cards in the Volop Ondernemen packages. GoDutch does, however, operate an ongoing cashback programme, rising to 1% per card transaction on the Unlimited package, with no cap.

The cashback levels at GoDutch increase with the package chosen: Free 0%, Starter 0.1%, Pro 0.4% and Unlimited 1%. Cashback is automatically paid back into your business account, regardless of the type of expense. For an entrepreneur with €4,000 in card spending per month, the Unlimited package delivers €480 cashback per year.

For entrepreneurs with several employees (such as a business account for your general partnership where both partners make business purchases) the effect can be considerable. With ABN AMRO, for the subscription of €9.90 to €22.25 per month, you get no card reward, regardless of spending volume. The difference is structural: GoDutch shares revenue, ABN AMRO uses a traditional banking model.

What automations does GoDutch offer over ABN AMRO?

GoDutch offers a number of automations that are missing from the basic ABN AMRO packages or are only available at additional cost. These include automatic invoice processing, VAT recognition, unlimited accounting integrations and team cards with spending control per card.

The automations that GoDutch offers as standard:

  • Automatic invoice processing: incoming invoices are recognised and prepared for approval and payment

  • Real-time VAT recognition: GoDutch recognises the VAT amount on transactions for your accounts

  • Unlimited accounting integrations: more than 30 packages without per-integration costs, while ABN AMRO charges €3.25 per month for extra integrations

  • Team cards with spending control: virtual and physical cards with their own limits and category restrictions

  • Free access for your accountant: an additional user at no cost, while ABN AMRO charges €12 per year for an extra IB user

ABN AMRO Ambitious and Boundless include one standard accounting integration, but each extension is charged separately. For entrepreneurs who want to streamline their administration as much as possible, this means that with ABN AMRO you are more likely to incur additional costs for features that are included as standard with GoDutch.

How much do extra IBANs and debit cards cost at ABN AMRO?

At ABN AMRO, an additional business IBAN costs €66 per year (around €5.50 per month) and an extra debit card costs €19 per year. An extra user for Business Internet Banking costs €12 per year. At GoDutch, additional IBANs are free from the Starter package and extra debit cards and users are free on the higher-tier packages.

The additional annual costs at ABN AMRO:

  • Additional business IBAN: €66 per year per account

  • Extra debit card: €19 per year per card

  • Extra Internet Banking user: €12 per year

  • Extra accounting link: €3.25 per month (€39 per year)

For a private limited company with three additional IBANs and two extra debit cards, that means €236 per year in additional costs, on top of package costs of at least €118.80. With GoDutch, that is included in the Pro package of €348 per year, including 0.4% cashback on all card spending.

For boards managing a business account for foundations or a business account for your homeowners' association who want to keep a separate IBAN per project, these costs can differ significantly on an annual basis. In addition, GoDutch applies the 0% VAT rate to the subscription for these legal forms, which widens the cost difference further.

How does GoDutch's customer service differ from that of ABN AMRO?

GoDutch is reachable 24/7 via chat, email and telephone by its own staff, in both Dutch and English. ABN AMRO offers online support via Mijn ABN AMRO and the app, plus telephone support during office hours and the option to make a physical appointment at a branch. In emergencies, ABN AMRO is reachable 24/7; for regular business questions, only during office hours.

ABN AMRO also has a network of branches spread across the Netherlands, plus special business desks for SMEs and large corporate clients. For entrepreneurs who like to discuss their banking face to face, for example when applying for financing or more complex payment transactions, that offers a strong advantage.

GoDutch operates without physical branches and opts for always-available digital contact. Questions are generally dealt with within minutes, even outside office hours. Pro and Unlimited customers are given priority; Unlimited customers also get a dedicated account manager. For entrepreneurs who do not want to depend on opening hours and who want multilingual support, GoDutch is a better fit.

How do I close my ABN AMRO business account and switch to GoDutch?

Transferring from ABN AMRO to GoDutch is arranged in four steps. Within one working day you have an operational account with GoDutch, and you only close your ABN AMRO account as the final step, so you can switch over calmly without missed payments.

Step-by-step plan for the switch:

  1. Open your account with GoDutch: complete the online application (three minutes), identify yourself with a passport or driving licence, and wait for KYC processing (three hours). Your IBAN and virtual Mastercard will be active straight after that.

  2. Inform contacts about your new IBAN: send customers and suppliers a short email with your new account number. In the GoDutch app, download a bank statement with your IBAN for your records.

  3. Move direct debits and subscriptions: update your recurring payments for energy, software subscriptions, suppliers and other periodic invoices. In GoDutch, set these up as a recurring order or via direct debit.

  4. Close your ABN AMRO account: transfer the remaining balance to GoDutch and close your ABN AMRO account via Business Internet Banking or by making an appointment at a branch. A detailed step-by-step guide to cancelling your ABN AMRO business account will help you through this.

Keep both accounts running in parallel for the first month, so any forgotten direct debits are not rejected. If you have any questions during the switch, GoDutch’s support team is available 24/7 via chat, email or phone. Ready to switch?
