Required details for a bank account

Before you can open a bank account, it helps to be well prepared. After all, you want to get through the application process quickly and smoothly. Most banks and financial institutions in the Netherlands ask for a number of standard details that you need to be able to provide. These include a valid form of identification, your Dutch Citizen Service Number (BSN) and proof of address. Below, you can read exactly what these documents involve and what you need to pay attention to.

A valid form of identification

In the Netherlands, you are required to be able to identify yourself when opening a bank account. A valid form of identification can, for example, be your Dutch passport, identity card, driving licence or residence permit. The bank uses these details to verify your identity and to check whether you meet the legal requirements.

A Dutch Citizen Service Number (BSN)

Your BSN is used in the Netherlands for all sorts of financial and administrative processes. When opening a bank account, it is therefore important that you can provide your BSN. You can find this number on your passport, driving licence or identity card. The bank needs your BSN to comply with legal obligations and to register you as the account holder.

Proof of address

Proof of address is a document that shows where you live. This can, for example, be a recent bill from your energy or internet provider, a tenancy or purchase agreement, or a municipal registration. Some banks also accept digital versions, as long as your name and address are clearly shown on them. Make sure your proof of address is up to date, so that there is no doubt about the validity of the information.

Not yet 18 years old?

If you are under 18 and still want to open your own bank account, you need permission from a parent or legal representative. In most cases, this person will co-sign when you submit your application. This is legally required, because minors are not allowed to enter into financial agreements without supervision.

For identification, in addition to your own valid proof of identity and, if applicable, your BSN, you will also need the details of your parent or guardian. This may include a proof of identity and proof of address that the parent or guardian must provide. Once the bank has checked this information, you can use a special youth or junior account. This allows you to learn how to manage money under certain conditions, while supervision from your parent or guardian remains in place.

Opening a Dutch bank account as an expat

Have you just moved to the Netherlands or are you temporarily working in the Netherlands from abroad? Then opening a bank account is a logical next step to help you manage your financial affairs properly.

As an expat, you will generally need the same documents as any other applicant: a valid form of identification, a BSN (if you are already registered with the municipality) and proof of address. If you do not yet have a BSN, because you have only just arrived, for example, first ask the municipality about the registration procedure. Often you can only open a bank account once you are officially registered.

In addition, some banks may ask for a residence permit or other evidence showing that you are legally residing in the Netherlands. When choosing a bank, it is wise to pay attention to the services available for expats. Some banks, for example, offer English-language customer service, while others provide extra support to help you find your way around the Dutch financial system. In any case, make sure all your documents are in order so that you can apply for and use your new account quickly and without complications.

Open a joint account

Do you want to open an account together with someone else, for example your partner, a family member or a good friend? This can be useful for making joint payments and managing the costs of, for example, groceries, rent or subscriptions in an organised way. The procedure is similar to opening an individual account, but there are a few extra steps you need to bear in mind. Both account holders will need to provide their details and identify themselves at the bank. You will also sign the agreement together.

If you already have an account with a particular bank, it is often possible to have it converted into a joint account. In that case, you only need to add the details of your co-holder and make sure that you both pass the identity check.

If you are starting with a completely new bank, you will go through the application process together. This includes providing valid proof of identity, BSN and proof of address for all new account holders. As soon as the bank has approved your application, you can immediately benefit from the convenience of a joint account.

Open a business account

If you are starting your own business or have already been running one for some time, a business bank account is essential for neatly separating your financial administration from your private expenses. In the Netherlands, this process usually starts with registration at the Chamber of Commerce (KvK). Once you have your KvK number, you can apply for a business current account at most banks or with innovative providers. In addition, you also need a valid proof of identity, a Citizen Service Number (BSN) and proof of address. With these, you show who you are and where you are based, so that the bank can verify your identity and business details.

During the application process, many banks ask for details about your business and the nature of your commercial activities. You often also have to indicate who is authorised to sign and make payments. In this way, banks ensure that the business account is used properly and that all official documents are in order.

Once you have opened your account, you can send invoices and receive payments in the name of your business. This gives you a clear overview of your finances and prevents confusion between private and business expenses, which ultimately provides more peace of mind and professionalism for you and your business.
