Discover the roots of Gelderland’s picturesque Achterhoek

by Demoed, E.J.

The Gelderland region east of the IJssel River is commonly known as the Achterhoek because most of the province lays west of this waterway. The author approaches the history of the region, which numbers nearly 70 cities, towns, villages and hamlets almost all with a medieval church in their centre, from a different perspective than most historians. Local church building initiatives required hierarchal approval and left a paper trail. The author examines the rise of the parishes, the background to the area’s spotty Reformation and RC roots, the Secession of 1834 and the Doleantie. A separate chapter deals with the Jewish presence, which dates back to from 1770. This book is a very helpful source when wanting context for family history.
