De IJssel De IJssel

Levende rivier

by Groenewoud, M., editor

The River IJssel is one of the least appreciated rivers in the Netherlands, likely because it covers a relatively short distance, splitting off from the Rhine near Arnhem to empty itself into the Ketelmeer, a lake situated between Overijssel and Flevoland, just west of Kampen. De IJssel river delta is unique for its scenery, the meandering river, the adjoining meadows, in Dutch called uiterwaarden, the dikes, the nature parks, the villages and the historic cities on this natural demarcation line which even during WWII served as a natural barrier, the IJssel line, to the Dutch, the Germans and the liberating Allied forces. Along its short route, De IJssel has more former Hanseatic cities than any other such waterway, notably Zutphen, Deventer, Hattem and Kampen with Zwolle and Hasselt nearby on a tributary. A must have volume for anyone with roots in the IJssel Delta wishing to put their ‘flesh’ on the genealogical bones of their family history. Have suburb photography whet your appetite and appreciation for this beautiful old country region.
