Journal of a Dutch Immigrant Journal of a Dutch Immigrant

by Ruiter, Francis

Francis travelled from Andijk, the Netherlands to Canada on the troop ship, the Kota Inten in April of 1948. His first job was at his uncle's small ranch in Houston B.C. where he worked for two years as a farm hand. After a stint as a lumber jack and a variety of occupations, he worked as a life insurance agent for 30 years. A bicycling accident, which left him an amputee, forced him into early retirement and a dramatic change in life. An athlete who ran marathons, he also could bike a hundred kilometers on a given day, loved backpacking, and canoeing the Coppermine River to the Arctic. After his recovery, however, he started to swim and set off on numerous other adventures…. Read about his life and how he approached it with "… offbeat tenacity (often bordering on bullheadedness) of one restless Dutch immigrant".
