New electronic passport contains chip with digital face scan

HAARLEM - The latest version of the new Dutch passport employing electronic scanning capabilities and - in the future - a fingerprint, will be available this Summer. The document will be embedded with a chip containing personal data, the bearer’s social security number, as well as a facial scan. Inclusion of a fingerprint will have to wait for new guidelines by the European Union yet to be decided, and ultimately to be used in passports of all EU member states. The new passport is the latest in a series since the early 1980s. Initially, it ran into major problems, including the resignation of the Minister responsible for the development.
