ROTTERDAM - Neste Oil, a large Finnish firm, has started up Europe’s largest renewable bio fuel plant on the Rotterdam Maasvlakte. The plant was completed on budget and on schedule. The production in Rotterdam will be increased gradually for a possible maximum capacity of 800,000 tons per year.

Analysts see the opening as a significant milestone in Neste Oil’s drive for cleaner transportation strategies and a further consolidation of its position as the world’s leading producer of renewable bio fuel.

The total production capacity of the Finnish company is now two million tons per year. Last year, a plant identical to the Rotterdam plant started production in Singapore. Two other plants have already been operating in Porvoo, Finland for several years.

All these plants produce renewable bio fuel and also have the capability of producing renewable aviation fuel. Thanks to its innovative technology, Neste can make this fuel from almost any vegetable oil or waste animal fat.

Neste Oil’s renewable bio fuel can be used in all diesel engines and existing fuel distribution systems. The fuel offers excellent performance at low temperatures and can be used either pure or blended with fossil diesel. Compared to fossil fuel diesel, Neste can achieve greenhouse emission reductions of up to 80 percent. The lower exhaust emissions also contribute to the improvement of overall air quality.
