LEEUWARDEN – Very rare film footage of the 1941 Eleven Cities Race skating marathon has now been posted online, thanks to amateur-filmer and future emigrant Piet Wagter. He covered the event and took the footage with him when he emigrated, first to Canada, and later to the USA. Just recently, the material was given to the Fries Film Archief, which digitized it. The online posting caused a sensation among marathon fans. Wagter was raised in Sneek where has family operated a flower shop. After moving to the USA, he later launched an artificial flower business. Wagter died in 1995, aged 89.
