Make-shift ‘soup kitchen’ claims world record

POELDIJK – The municipality Westland, also known as the ‘city of glass’ due to its unparalleled concentration of greenhouses, has gained yet another distinction: a world record at making tomato-vegetable soup. Cooks used 7,500 kilograms of tomatoes, 12,000 kilograms of cucumbers, 450 kilograms of paprika and 825 kilograms of onions to make 26,000 litres of soup as part of an Agri Business Centrum Westland open house promotion. Visitors were treated to a bowl of soup but left the cooks with plenty to spare for the needy in the region. The greenhouse district is part of a Dutch phenomena: being a net food exporter despite densely populated the Netherlands being such a small country.
