Dutch agencies aim for high-tech dike monitoring systems

EEMSHAVEN – A dike near the Groningen Eemshaven will be outfitted with numerous sensors to electronically monitor its ongoing condition. Scientists have already conducted a series of tests on dikes by trying to create artificial emergencies. The Eemshaven dike experiment is the first one involving a (non crucial) sea dike. The dike has only a secondary role as a flood barrier. The tests should help to develop better monitoring systems and procedures for the water boards. Other countries are also keenly interested in high-tech dikes of the future. The tests are being jointly conducted by number of largely northern Dutch agencies and water boards.
