HEERENVEEN – Getting around on bikes remains a popular option in the Netherlands. It is good for business too. Bicycle maker Accell, the owners of an impressive list of mostly Dutch brandnames, including Batavus and Sparta, reaped the benefits of gorgeous weather and its improved selection in the first six months of its current fiscal year. Total sales rose to $371 million up from $327 million but profitability made a bigger leap, $21.8 million up from $14.3 million. Various higher-end models of leading brand name Batavus are now available in the U.S. where Accell has acquired Seattle Bike Supply. A Toronto distributor is introducing the brand name with the standard upright Dutch bike across Canada. Accell plants to pursue other acquisitions in North and South America.
